A Simple Homemade Gujarati Dinner
Looking for a comforting homemade dinner that’s easy to prepare after a busy day? This simple Gujarati dinner includes Aloo Sabji, Traditional Gujarati Dal, Rice, and Roti. It’s wholesome, budget-friendly, and perfect for feeding the whole family in just 30 minutes.
For the Aloo Sabji
- 3 potatoes, diced
- 2 green chillies, chopped
- 1 tomato, chopped
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1 tsp mustard seeds (rai)
- ½ tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp red chilli powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- Salt to taste
- Water (enough to cover the potatoes)
- ½ tsp garam masala
For Serving
- Traditional Gujarati Dal
- Steamed Rice
- Fresh Rotis
Method
Step 1 – Prepare the Sabji
Heat oil in a pan.
Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
Add the chopped green chillies and tomatoes. Cook until the tomatoes become soft.
Now add:
- Turmeric powder
- Red chilli powder
- Coriander powder
- Salt
Mix everything well.
Add the diced potatoes and stir until they are coated with the spices.
Pour in enough water to just cover the potatoes.
Cover and cook on a low flame until the potatoes are soft and fully cooked.
Finish by adding garam masala and mix well.
Step 2 – Prepare the Dal

Ingredients
- 1 cup toor dal (split pigeon peas)
- 3 cups water (for pressure cooking)
- 1 small tomato, finely chopped
- 1 green chilli, slit
- 1 tsp ginger paste
- ¼ tsp turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
For the Sweet & Tangy Flavour
- 2 tbsp jaggery (adjust to taste)
- 1 tbsp tamarind pulp (or juice from ½ lemon if preferred)
For the Tempering (Tadka)
- 2 tbsp ghee or oil
- 1 tsp mustard seeds (rai)
- 1 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
- A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
- 8–10 curry leaves
- 2 dried red chillies
- ½ tsp fenugreek seeds (optional)
Garnish
- Fresh coriander leaves, chopped
Step 1: Cook the Dal
- Wash the toor dal thoroughly.
- Pressure cook it with water and turmeric for 3–4 whistles, or until soft.
- Once cooled, mash the dal well until smooth.
Step 2: Prepare the Dal
- Transfer the mashed dal to a deep pot.
- Add the chopped tomato, green chilli, ginger paste, salt, jaggery, and tamarind pulp.
- Add about 2–3 cups of water to adjust the consistency.
- Mix well and let it simmer for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Step 3: Prepare the Tadka
- Heat ghee or oil in a small pan.
- Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
- Add cumin seeds, hing, fenugreek seeds (if using), dried red chillies, and curry leaves.
- Sauté for a few seconds until fragrant.
Step 4: Finish
- Pour the hot tempering over the simmering dal.
- Mix gently and cook for another 2 minutes.
- Garnish with freshly chopped coriander.
Finally
Serve the hot Aloo Sabji with Gujarati Dal, steamed rice, and fresh rotis for a complete and satisfying family meal.
